Therapy FAQs

What will happen in my first therapy session?

Our first session together usually looks a lot different than our typical weekly sessions. We review the informed consent process and important policies with you. Then we spend time gathering important background information from and collaborate with you to develop goals for therapy. This is called an “intake” session.

If you have a child, depending on their age and your input during your initial phone consult, your child may or may not be present for part of the “intake.”

How do I talk to my child about starting therapy?

How you explain therapy to your child is going to be different depending on their age, development, and history. Regardless, emphasize that therapy is to help them and it can be fun.

For most younger children, we explain that we are “feelings doctors.” When your body gets sick, you go to the doctor to get medicine and learn how to get healthy. When you have a lot of big emotions, you go to the “feelings doctor” to feel better and learn how to take care of your thoughts and feelings.

For older children and adolescents, we can explain more (e.g., “Therapy is a special place that is JUST FOR YOU to talk about your worries and get help with things that are hard”).

What if my child doesn’t like therapy?

We use a child-centered approach and are creative in how we engage your child in therapy. We even play video games with some of our clients! Your child may have had negative experiences with professionals in the past - we love helping them have a corrective experience with us.
