Psychological Testing for Academic & Professional Exam Accommodations

Struggling to keep up or pass your exams? Always running out of time on tests?

Many high-achievers don’t realize they need accommodations until later in their academic career. Psychological disabilities like depression, anxiety, and trauma are often overlooked or pushed aside until they can no longer be ignored. ADHD is missed until the executive functioning load becomes too great. All of these problems are considered disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) eligible for accommodations in school and on high stakes exams such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, Bar, USMLE, and NCBE. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation can determine your needs, diagnoses, and recommend ADA accommodations to support your access to achieving your dreams. Universities, training programs, and professional exam boards such as the Bar Examiners, National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), American College Testing (ACT), Educational Testing Service (ETS), and College Board often require a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation to verify your need for formal accommodations.

Common test accommodations include:

  • Extra time for tests and exams (e.g., 50% or 100% extra time).

  • Semi-private or private room with minimal distractions for tests and exams.

  • Enlarged print or text-to-speech.

  • Access to paper or electronic version of the test.

  • Scribe or reader.

  • Additional breaks during tests and exams.

  • Permission to stand and move during lectures or exams.

Dr. Stephanie Svendez

Hi there, I’m Dr. Stephanie! Consider me your professional partner on this journey. I bring my expert toolset and together we make sense of why things have been hard for you and what accommodations you need to succeed.

As a neurodiversity-affirming psychologist with over a decade of disability advocacy:

  • I always trust and prioritize your description of your experiences and needs. You don’t need to “prove” anything to me. Simply sharing your story is enough.

  • I collaborate with other members of your advocacy team, such as attorneys, advocates, or therapists, to provide the best documentation to support your needs.

  • I tailor documentation to meet the specific requirements of your university, professional training program, and/or professional exam board (e.g., GRE, NCBE, Bar, NBME, USMLE).

  • I carefully detail the functional impact of your disability and rationale behind each recommended accommodation to increase the likelihood that your workplace, school, or board will recognize and grant necessary supports.

  • I aim to help you better understand yourself, rather than simply figure out what “box” to fit you in, or pathologize neurodivergent traits.

  • I understand ADHD and autism often look different in women and people with complex histories, compared to the stereotypes.

  • I take into account how culture and masking can impact your experience.

  • I acknowledge psychology and medicine’s problematic past and present. Critique, concern, and skepticism is welcome!

  • I respect self-diagnosis and self-advocacy.

  • I accommodate different learning, thinking, and communication styles throughout our work together.

What’s involved in a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment?

  • Clinical Interviews

Dr. Stephanie meets “face-to-face” via telehealth video with you and any family/friends/partners as appropriate. Some of our conversation may feel informal, and some will be semi-structured asking about specific symptoms and experiences.

  • Standardized Questionnaires

You and other important people in your life are sent standardized questionnaires via email to complete based on your assessment questions. This adds some quantitative (numbers) data to the information given in interviews. It also helps compare what you're experiencing to others your age and gender.

  • Performance Testing

We meet in person or via telehealth to complete cognitive (IQ) testing and academic achievement testing that provides more information on your learning and problem solving styles. I tailor my battery based on input from your attorney and requirements of your specific university, program, or professional exam board. I select tests that will best identify and support access to your needed accommodations.

  • Visual Feedback Session + Report

Dr. Stephanie meets with you to clearly explain the takeaways. The results of the assessment are summarized into a visual slide show presentation covering your strengths and needs, diagnoses, explaining important concepts, and recommendations that you can implement right away. This is saved as a PDF and sent to you along with a brief letter detailing your diagnoses.

You are provided a full narrative report with comprehensive details about each assessment result, areas of need, and documentation tailored to advocating for your needed accommodations under ADA.

Fees

Virtual Assessment

See a breakdown of fees in my FAQ guide.

$6,480 (6-8 hours of testing + IQ / achievement testing + written report)
$360 per additional testing hour

Flat fee includes up to 8 hours of interviews, testing with the client, and the assessment feedback session. Any additional time with the client is billed at $360/hour. In-person testing requires $25 travel fee per visit. At the end of your assessment intake, you will be quoted the maximum amount expected based on your referral questions.

Consultation & Advocacy

$260 per hour + $25 travel fee per visit

It is often helpful for me accompany you to school meetings or medical appointments to help explain the test results and help you advocate for needed services and supports. Adult clients often need support applying for accommodations with work or school. In-person advocacy beyond the clinic, when included with an assessment, is charged at $260 an hour plus a small travel fee to cover the cost of roundtrip mileage and time away from the clinic. An additional travel fee may be included if travel is required outside of 10 miles of Corvallis, OR.

In-Person Assessment

California & Oregon only

$360 per hour + $25 travel fee per visit

Sometimes in-person testing is required. If we are provided with a private, quiet space suitable for testing, I can bring assessment to your home, school, or workplace. When testing or observations must occur in person, I charge the standard $360 hourly rate plus a small travel fee to cover the cost of roundtrip mileage, time away from the clinic, and additional time required to coordinate. An additional travel fee may be included if travel is required outside of 10 miles of Corvallis, OR.
